The Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing requires licensed practical nurses to have the following before they can be legally employed:

• Must have completed at least 12 years of education with a diploma from a public, parochial or private school or its equivalent as stated by the Department of Education
• Must have completed an approved course in practical nursing with no less that 1,500 hours and within a period no less than 12 months
• Must be at least 18 years old and of good moral character
• Must have passed the NCLEX-PN
• Must have undergone and passed a criminal background check
